The University Council was the administrative body of the University of Manitoba with jurisdiction over all University business and academic affairs from 1877 to 1917. From 1917 to 1936,the University Council was responsible to the Board of Governors for the academic administration of the University. In 1936, the University Council was abolished and replaced by the Senate. The Council was composed of representatives of the Colleges, Provincial Government, Convocation, Faculties and Schools. The number of members of the Council rose from twenty-six in 1877 to seventy-two in 1917. After 1917, the Council consisted of twenty-eight members. The chairman of the University Council was the Chancellor ot the University from 1877 to 1933, and the President of the University from 1933 to 1936.
